This project was the second one conducted for
the World Bank and the Croatian Mine Action Center. It involved
clearance of AP and AT mines laid on a large area in a number
of sites near the town of Sibenik in southern Croatia. Many
types of mines were cleared such as PMA-2 and PMR-2A. Others
were cleared as well. The project included using of a remote
controlled Mini Flail type MV-3 owned by Maavarim and Explosive
Detection Dogs.
A project conducted for the Industrial Council
of Ramat Hovav which aimed to clear an area that used to be
a fire zone in Southern Israel (near the city of Beer-Sheva).
The area was cleared with the purpose of developing the site
and building new industries. The area was contaminated with
UXOs, and mine detectors and bomb locators were used as well
as to clear the site.
This project involved the clearance of an
area contaminated with various types of UXO's from area that
was previously used as an ammunition depot, which had exploded.
The land was checked and scanned to a depth of 7m by special
Bomb Locators which were scattered all over the area.
After scanning, the upper layer was removed into a stone crusher
in order to assure to clearance. The project enabled the development
of the electric site.
This project was conducted for the World
Bank and The Croatian Mine Action Center. The project involved
clearance of AP and AT mines laid in and around Sunja Railway
station. Booby traps and PROM fragmentation mines were cleared,
as well as other types of mines and UXOs. Some of the operation
was in a highly vegetated area, which required vegetation-cutting
equipment.
Other devices were used such as a remote controlled Mini Flail,
and Explosive Detection Dogs.
Maavarim's employers in this project were the
Israeli Ministry of Tourism and Kibbutz Gesher. The project
included clearing the minefields surrounding a tourist site
and the clearance of the west bank of the Jordan River attached
to the site. The project ensured safety of tourists visit
the site. The continuation of the archeological excavations
was permitted as well.
The demining was of Israeli minefields, mine type 4a. However,
while clearing the river bank, some old fragmentation mines
type 12 were found as well. Most of the work was done manually
with mine detectors and prodders. However, on various spots
where mines where not located, we used an bagger plus a
vibrating sieve.
This project was conducted for the following:
'Arim' construction company, Israeli Ministry of Defense and
Ministry of Housing. The project involved demining of an old
and mixed Jordanian minefield near Jerusalem. The types of
the mines were M-35 and Mark-5; the execution entailed a combination
of manual and Mechanical methods, using bulldozers, baggers
and a stone crusher.
The project enabled the establishment of a new neighborhood
of the Har Adar settlement, consisting of 1,200 new houses.
Projects done for the Israeli Ministry of Defense
and Ministry of Tourism in the Jordan Park is adjacent to
the Jordan River. The task involved the demining of safe paths
in area suspected of containing old wooden Syrian AP mines
type PMD-6 after floods. The work method was mainly manual,
and in some points usage of mine extractor and an bagger.
The continuation of the first stage in the Jordan
Park was the expansion of the demining to the rest of the
park, promoting tourism not only in one area, but throughout
the whole park. The work method was similar to the one used
in the first stage due to the similarity of mines and terrain.
Clearance conducted for the Had Ness Moshav and
The Israeli Ministry of Defense. It involved demining of a
Syrian mine fields in the Golan Heights in order to enable
the expanding of the settlement by building new neighborhoods
instead of the minefields. The minefields were consisting
of both AP and AT mines: ACID-47, PP-MI-SK, PP-MI-SR, as well
as different UXOs.
The project was completed by means of both manual and mechanical
methods. The mechanical equipment used included AARDVARK flail,
an bagger, and a mine extractor.
On the second stage of this project, Maavarim
was asked to clear the total area of the minefields, which
contained TM-46 mines. The work was done mechanically, with
an extractor, and manually. During the project, many UXO's
were located and destroyed as well.
Maavarim was hired by the Israeli Ministry
of Defense and Ministry of National Infrastructure to conduct
a work in some old Syrian minefields by clearing paths to
enable geological survey. The work was done in order to expand
the bridge, and the roads leading to it.
The type of mine was an AT mine, type TM-46, and the work
was done mechanically, with a mine extractor and manually
in a very vegetated area.
A project that was conducted for the Israeli Electric
Company & Ministry of Defense. The aim of the project
was to clear a vast area surrounding a power station supplying
electricity to much of Northern Israel. After the project
was concluded, it was possible to expand and develop the site.
The mines that were cleared were AP mines, type 10, and the
work method used was purely manual, using mine detectors and
prodders.
MRE program amongst Kosovo Albanian
refugees. The work was ordered by the JDC in order to enable
this population a safe returning to their homes after the
Kosovo conflict.
Preparing educational Mine Risk Education program for
Druze children and communities living on the Golan Heights,
an area surrounded by vast mine fields. The guidance included
the knowledge of mines, their risks, and the ways to avoid
them.
Developing new equipment for the clearance of
mines and UXOs, in conjunction with the Israel Aircraft Industries.
Among the items:
1. APMINUD - Anti-Personnel Mine Mechanical Neutralization
Device.
2. Light Extractor - used for surface munitions clearance.
Consultants and advisors to Angolan government
and the Angolan Engineering forces on procurement and instruction
of new equipment, mainly heavy machinery.
Maavarim deployed its personnel to instruct
the South Korean army on mine detection equipment, including
mine detectors, bomb locators and other equipment bought by
the South Korean army.
A wide scope project that was conducted for the
Ministry of Defence in May 2002. During the project, which
lasted three weeks, 800 tons of expired ammunition were disposed,
among them: tank shells, artillery shells, AP and AT mines,
hand grenades and other.
This project is considered to be complex because of the various
types of ammunition that were dispose. This called for numerous
methods of work, for example shells dismantling or burning
of low explosives. The project was executed in the southern
part of Israel in a fire zone.
A project conducted for RAMTA, aimed to dispose
a large amount of ammunition from an old bunker. The ammunition
included mainly tank and artillery shells, that were taken
to a remote fire zone in the desert to be disposed, and the
technique used was detonating with explosives.
Executing several EOD projects for the Israeli
MOD (Air Force and Ground Forces), aimed to dispose various
types of ordnance, mostly expired. All projects were conducted
in conjunction with the IDF forces, while both sides shared
experience, equipment and data sources.

Maavarim Operates Explosive Detection Dogs team
in the Oil Refineries in Haifa, by searching fuel trucks entering
the site. These dogs are specially trained to work in an environment
saturated with petrol odors. The team works in various hours
and shifts, to prevent the occurrence of terror actions in
this site.
Due to the efficiency performed in the Haifa Oil Refineries,
Maavarim had begun to operate Explosive Detection Dogs in
the Ashdod site as well. In that site we use the same technique
to train the dogs, in order to allow them working in these
unique conditions.
The Israel Airport Authority, which inspects the Border Control,
has rented Maavarim's services in order to detect explosives
that are being smuggled to Israel from the Palestinian Autonomy.
Maavarim operates several teams, searching all kind of goods,
agricultural products, containers, machines etc.
Maavarim has conducted a project for the Israel Airport Authority
in Ben Gurion Airport during January 2003. Two Explosive Detection
Dog teams were operated in that project, and searched mainly
vehicles of all kinds and luggage. The breeds that were used
are suitable for working among people, especially Labradors
and Jack Russells.
Maavarim operated two teams of Drug Detection Dogs on Festival
cruise ships, which were sailing between the American continents
during the period of January till April 2003. The service was
provided to Veligo, an international Security Company, which provided the
security on the ships. The dogs were trained to detect several types of drugs,
and were daily active on detection missions.
Maavarim provides services of Explosives Detection
to Nachshon Security Company, which conducts security activities
in special events, conferences, in which dignitary take part.
Maavarim's dog teams integrate in these activities by searching
the site prior to and during the event.
